Visit to Kibera
Estelle and Phil are just back from a visit to Nairobi. Around 160 children attend the feeding programme each week and lunch is nutritious with stew, milk, fruit and chapatis. Visitors, who travelled with us, commented how healthy the KIN children looked compared to those along the slum tracks. There are 106 children in the Guardianship Scheme, attending school, with uniforms, books and lunch each day. These families also receive a weekly food pack. KIN also supports a further 48 children through their education. 4 years at secondary school (if boarding) costs in the region of £2,800 for 1 child, far beyond the reach of most Kibera caregivers.

The challenges for the KIN team are huge as they support children coping with HIV status, poverty and abuse. It was excellent to hear good news of Samuel, working as a mechanic, and Semira, as a hairdresser in Mombassa, as a result of KIN funding.

KIN Business Support
200 small businesses have now received loans. The KIN team is working hard to provide training and support. Estelle visited Husna, who gets up every morning at 4.00am to make chapatis to sell in front of her shack in Kibera. She also sells cloth and charcoal to support herself and 5 children (3 orphans from her brother). Her husband died a year ago and the KIN loan has encouraged her to grow her business to earn enough money to pay rent and for food.
