Guardianship             Scheme Guidelines

What is the Guardianship Scheme?

The KIN (Kibera In Need) Guardianship Scheme enables donors to directly help a child living in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Through the Guardianship Scheme the children are assured of continuity of support until they reach adulthood or leave the scheme. Guardians are able to watch from a distance a deprived child receive opportunities which would not otherwise be available to them. Guardians may sponsor more than one child and can sponsor jointly with friends, work colleagues etc.

How are children selected?

Children are selected for the Guardianship Scheme by the staff of KIN’s partner in Nairobi, a non-government organisation called Riziki, meaning provision. Input is also received from the local community and its leaders. The children all live in the Kibera slum and are chosen on the basis of need. The majority of the children are orphaned but children are also selected if they are vulnerable, meaning that their family has a low income or the parents are sick and unable to work on a regular basis. Guardians can specify whether they would like to support a boy or girl and select from the following age ranges 0-8, 9-13 and 14-18.

How are Guardianship Funds Spent?

The cost of Guardianship is currently £20.00 per month. This money is spent providing the child with a hot meal 6 days a week, vaccinations, school uniform/books and stationery, shoes, emergency medical care and counselling. Any surplus funds are used to fund work in the community where the child lives including the support of a feeding programme helping a broader group of children and the provision of food packs to families in the community. In Nairobi 10% of the Guardianship monies is used to contribute to the salaries of the Riziki staff who administer the scheme and daily work with the families and children. The cost of Guardianship is kept under review.

How do Guardians make their contribution?

Guardians can choose to set up a standing order for £20 a month or alternatively can pay by cheque annually or 6 monthly. With a Gift Aid declaration KIN can reclaim 25% tax on a Guardian's giving but the Guardian must pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax at least equal to the tax that KIN (Kibera in Need) reclaims on the donations in the appropriate tax year (currently 25p for each £1 given). The tax reclaimed is used to further support the work within the community.

How long does Guardianship last?

Guardianship lasts until a child reaches 18 or finishes vocational training which ever is the later. KIN’s objective is that through the Guardianship Scheme a child will be better placed to find employment on reaching adulthood. Guardianship also terminates if a child relocates from the Kibera. If a Guardian wishes to withdraw support before the Guardianship comes to an end, KIN will do its best to ensure that the sponsored child continues to receive support from KIN’s general fundraising reserve.

What communication is there between Guardians and their Sponsored Children?

Guardians can send letters and small parcels via KIN (Kibera in Need). Useful gifts are underwear, socks, and t shirts but gifts of pens, crayons, books and small toys are also always welcomed. Please keep parcels to the size of an A5 package if possible. Sponsored children enormously appreciate contact with their Guardians and the letters of support and encouragement which they receive. Guardians will be notified when a visit to Nairobi is to be made and should send packages and letters to KIN (Kibera in Need), Pownall Hall Farm, Broad Walk, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5PZ.

KIN invites Guardians each year in the autumn to an Annual Guardians & Supporters Afternoon Tea and provides an update booklet on the sponsored child and the work of the charity. Throughout the year the website is regularly updated with news. Guardians are also welcome to participate in a self funded visit to Nairobi and Kibera.
