Feeding Childen in Kibera

Children waiting at the Kibera Academy on Saturday

The weekly meal on Saturday is cooked by volunteers in a building owned by a school in Kibera. The children come in the middle of the day and have a meal, receive counselling, and take part in singing and drama activities. As many as 200 orphaned or vulnerable children, ranging in age from babies to 17 year olds, attend the feeding.

The meal the children are given is often the only meal they receive for 2 days because of the weekend. As well as chapattis and stew, the children are given fruit and milk and utensils are provided. The weekly cost of the feeding programme is currently 39,920 Ksh’s (approximately £257) and there is a constant need for funds to meet this cost. The cost of feeding fluctuates depending upon the level of drought and success of the harvest in Kenya. Children who cannot come to the feeding programme because they are too young or sick are provided with food packs which can be eaten at home.

Mealtime with over 200 friends

At Christmas the KIN team hold a Christmas Party for the children and their caregivers and each child receives a small gift. Urgent needs throughout the year are also met for items such as mattresses, shoes, clothes and replacement uniform. Recently the children had their eyes and ears checked.

Playing outside

Each year the KIN team also try to take the children on an outing away from Kibera. The children have visited a playground and also the crocodile park. In 2011 they hope to go to the National Park in Nairobi.

As well as helping to meet the weekly cost donations are also used to fund the cost of utensils, mats and cooking pots all of which need to be replaced from time to time.
