Parklands Ayra School in Nairobi
|
For many Kibera children education, and particularly secondary education, is a luxury item. At age 13/14, unless the parent/carer can afford the secondary school fees many vulnerable Kibera teenagers cannot continue in school. The cost of sending these children to school is between £500/£700 for each of 4 years. Click here for the profiles of three current education support students : John, Dennis and Sheila.
KIN’s policy is to fund a child right through to age 18 and provide appropriate vocational training on the basis that to stop funding at the end of primary school leaves a child, at a vulnerable age on the tracks of Kibera without support or occupation.
The picture is of Jackline, Maureen and Lucy. Lucy finished school last December and is likely to start a training course in hotel management and tourism within the next couple of months. They are with Nicholas. The school appears to be excellent with good facilities and committed staff so these girls have a real chance of doing well and being able to get employment afterwards.

Betty Academy Primary School
|
There are 14 children who are at Betty Academy primary school in the rural area. They are all Education Support students in the last few years of primary school and being prepared for the KCPE exam which will determine which secondary school they go to. Boarding at the Betty Academy gives them security, regular meals, a good education, the chance to be part of a community outside of Kibera and the hope that they will be able to move onto a good secondary school. The Riziki team visit once a term and liaise with the teachers and make sure the children have the uniform, shoes and personal effects that they need.
