Guardianship Primary Education Costs in Kibera
Although primary education has been free in Kenya since 2003, classes frequently number between 80 and 100. Existing free education is still difficult to access for slum children. To attend school they need money for uniform, shoes, stationery and books and some schools still ask for a tuition fee. Government schools are frequently some distance from the slum areas making it difficult to get to school. In any event children above the entry age of 6 find it difficult to get into a government school because there are not enough places or even the desks to cope with the numbers. The costs shown have been estimated in the winter period 2008/2009 and reflect the significant increases of the cost of food following the violence in January 2008. Volunteers and caregivers need training on a regular basis, which together with rented storage space and other material creates an additional cost for which we must budget.
