Pauline

Pauline is six years old, she has two sisters and one brother. They are Beartice Ndululu 7years, Ruth Mwikali 3.5 years and Joseph Kamau 14 years old. The parents are Albanos Munyao and Mary Njeri.

Pauline is in St. Vincent nursery school; she is a bright girl who comes position in top three out of 30 pupils. For that her school fees of 750 per month is partially waived, so she pays 250 per month- which is still difficult to afford; she can stay home for 3 weeks when chased out of school. She loves running, playing with bottle tops and stones. Her mum says that Pauline is very hard working and enthusiastic in everything that she does. 'I hope that she studies till college for her to get a good job,' the mother laments.

The father did a small scale business of selling sukuma wiki (kales) but went down when he started taking local brew.

The mother was born in 1973 at Katundu in Thika, she studied until class eight at Nembu primary school, then did a knitting course The skill earned her employment and worked for many years before she quit but because of asthma. She attends Wanga Medical clinic for medication at a fee. She sells onions, and tomatoes along the roadside which she gets from the near by toy market, carries them on her back and arrives home tired. Being asthmatic she experiences breathing difficulties in the morning. Her efforts are also frustrated by her husband especially when he comes drunk to harass her at her place of work.

Pauline and her family live in Kibera in a one bed roomed house which they struggle to pay 1200 shillings per month. Food is problem and this gives her psychological torture and lacks (this the teacher noted) concentration in class.
