Business Operations in Kibera

Priscilla Auma

Would you like to help a small business in the Kibera? Many very small operations exist run by hard-working people in often desperately difficult circumstances. Such businesses may be small, but they are key to sustainable prosperity. When one of these businesses begins to prosper, it takes on employees, thus transforming the lives of not only the owner but several other families as well. These businesses are often run with almost no capital, and an injection of a little cash from outside can make all the difference to their ability to grow and prosper.

To the right is Priscilla Auma, mother of Ann, Maureen and Diana and a widow. She goes to Nairobi for vegetables each morning at 6.00am and she also sells groundnuts and fish. Priscilla has had a loan of 5000 Ksh’s (about £40) which she used to buy stock. She is now repaying the loan.

We work by way of loans, on relatively easy terms. Loans vary in size from 3,500 Ksh’s (approximately £28) to 90,000 Ksh (approximately £735). Beyond that level finance through the banking system should be available. We find that the loan system improves the self-esteem and motivation of the business-person, as well as allowing the money to be ‘recycled’ and benefit several different businesses over a period of time. In excess of 150 Kibera business people have been supported and some have repaid and received follow on loans. Training in business skills is also given.

If you feel you may be able to help financially, then take a look at the examples of Businesses which have been supported. You can make a one off donation or set up a standing order for regular giving. If you decide to support this area of KIN’s work on a regular basis then your monthly donation will be used to meet business needs identified by our partners in Naurobi. We will update you annually on how your money has been used. It will also be possible to look for updates on our website.
